Synopsis:
“Colors Belong to Everyone” is a story about a young boy who is confronted for the first time with a
social stereotype. Timmy, the young boy, goes with his mother to a store to purchase a book bag for
school. The book bag Timmy selects is pink. Throughout the story the salesperson in the store
discourages Timmy from purchasing the pink book bag by saying pink is a girl's color. "You don't want
to buy a girl's book bag, do you?" the salesperson asks. The salesperson suggests that Timmy should
choose a nice brown, green or black one. Those, according to the salesperson, are the boy's colors.
Timmy begins to question his choice of pink because the salesperson is so adamant. But in his heart
Timmy knows the pink book bag is the one he wants. Torn with indecision, Timmy turns to his mother for
guidance.
